MARCH TO WAR

The decision to wage war with Iraq was made earlier in 2001, and the 9/11 terrorist acts, as horrible as they were, only gave the Bush administration an excuse to turn the international community’s attention to Iraq’s Saddam Hussein. It is common knowledge, however, that the “monster of the Middle East” was created by the United States and Great Britain in the 1980’s when Iran was the enemy. In politics, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, regardless of ideological differences.
Peace activists around the world will hold demonstrations, but the war will go on. Nothing can stand in the way of a son’s determination to finish what his father has started and to hear these wonderful words: “I am proud of you, son. Good job.” There lies the irony of patriotism at times of war: A citizen thinks he dies for his country, when in reality he dies for the politicians.
Rebuilding Iraq will be an easy task, but the anti-American sentiment created by our bellicose attitude, our arrogance, our overconfidence and our double standards will last forever and even touch the souls of the unborn.
